About us

We build a safe and supportive community based on solidarity, education and human rights.

Rainbow Tarnow Association has been active in Tarnow since 2021, bringing together people interested in LGBTQIA+ community issues, activism and anti-discrimination work.

Our key goals are to improve safety for LGBTQIA+ people in public and private spaces, build support networks for excluded people, and provide reliable anti-discrimination and sexual-health education.

We also advocate for minority rights and social inclusion by building alliances with public institutions and NGOs, with an intersectional perspective that includes, among others, people with disabilities and seniors.

One Tree Garden

Together with the Tarnow Revitalization Committee and the local community, we run Tarnow's first community garden and activate residents through outdoor initiatives.

History

From a grassroots initiative to an organization that creates real local change.

Rainbow Tarnow was established to create a safe space for LGBTQAIP+ people in Tarnow and nearby areas. From a grassroots initiative, we became an association running the Tarnow Equality Center and One Tree Garden.

The initiative was sparked by traumatic events for the Polish queer community during the first Equality March in Bialystok in 2019. The scale of verbal and physical aggression revealed the urgent need for local spaces where non-heteronormative, transgender and intersex people could feel accepted and understood.

At the beginning, our informal group focused on small community meetings to connect with local queer people. With support from Fundacja Rownosc.org.pl and the Przepraszam Association, we organized our first rainbow event: a screening of The Death and Life of Marsha P. Johnson and an introductory lecture on LGBTQAIP+ issues.

The initiative paused for a time, but returned in 2020 when the Queer Tour collective visited nearby Tuchow and helped reignite local activism and education.

The group fully reactivated in spring 2021. The first major happening with educational stands and social dancing took place on May 16 after Tarnow joined the LGBT+ Ja educational campaign.

Summer and autumn 2021 were marked by a public picnic in Park Strzelecki and prevention campaigns with HIV, HCV and syphilis testing.

Since 2021 we have organized the annual Rainbow Picnic, with multiple editions, honorary patronage of the Mayor of Tarnow, honorary patronage of the European Commission in 2023, and support from local businesses and NGOs from across Poland.

In 2022 we formally became a regular association, and on 11.05.2024 members passed a resolution to transform into a registered association.

In 2024 we officially opened Tarnow Equality Center, the second LGBTQ-friendly cultural venue in Malopolska, and in 2025 we revitalized the courtyard opposite the venue to create One Tree Garden with local partners and community support.
